Frequently Asked Questions
1. WHAT IS A TOPPER (OR HAIRPIECE)?
A topper (also known as a hairpiece or partial wig) is a hair system designed to conceal hair thinning or hair loss by adding coverage, volume, and/or length to your natural hair.
Unlike a wig, which covers the entire head, a topper only covers the top portion, allowing your natural hair to blend with the topper. It also differs from hair extensions, as it attaches to the top of the head using clips.
Toppers are ideal for women with fine or thinning hair who want to cover sparse areas or simply add volume to their biological hair. To wear a topper, you need to have natural hair around the perimeter where the clips will attach, as well as at the front to blend with the topper hair—unless you're planning to wear bangs, in which case the front area is less critical.
A topper offers more freedom than a wig because it blends naturally with your own hair. It’s also cooler to wear and allows for styling options such as updos and braids, depending on your styling skills.
2. THE HAIR
Our toppers are made from 100% remy human hair, with intact cuticles, which is the highest grade of human hair available. We use Brazilian and European grade hair.
Brazilian hair is thicker, less prone to tangling, and better at holding curls. It has a sleek, more structured appearance, making it ideal for color treatments like balayage and highlights due to its strength.
European hair is finer and has a more textured, natural look. It is more expensive than Brazilian hair and, being thinner, is more prone to tangling and less able to hold curls for extended periods. However, women with fine natural hair may find it matches their own texture more closely.
Both types are high-quality and natural, but they cater to different needs. Your choice should be based on your lifestyle and the characteristics you desire in a topper.
3. THE BASE (CAP)
Haroy offers three standard cap sizes: 18x18cm, 20x20cm, and 23x23cm (custom sizes are available upon request). The cap consists of two main areas: a hand-sewn section made of silk or lace, and a wefted area. The silk or lace section typically measures 10x10cm or 9x12.5cm (see product descriptions) and is multidirectional, allowing you to part your hair in the middle or to either side within that section.
Toppers may be constructed with silk or lace, each offering distinct benefits:
- Silk: Provides the most natural finish by mimicking the scalp and concealing hair knots for a realistic look. It is soft, strong, and durable, often lasting for years with proper care. However, it is less breathable and slightly thicker than lace.
- Lace: Lightweight and highly breathable, perfect for warm climates and a natural-looking front hairline. Being a single layer, hair knots may be visible and require more delicate maintenance. It is more fragile and has a shorter lifespan compared to silk.
The best choice depends on your personal preferences, comfort, and the final effect you wish to achieve.
4. INTERIOR COMPONENTS OF THE CAP
Inside the cap, there is a comb at the front and six clips around the perimeter. It's essential that these components are made from high-quality materials to avoid pressure, sensitivity, or irritation.
Haroy ensures that only premium materials are used to make the topper both safe and comfortable.
If you'd prefer the front comb to be removed or replaced with clips, just leave a note with your order or contact us. You can also add extra clips or combs to your cart if you’d like the option to modify your piece in the future.
5. WHAT IF I HAVE WAVY OR CURLY HAIR?
Ever wonder why most alternative hairpieces dry straight? It’s because naturally wavy or curly virgin hair is very hard to source. If your hair is wavy or curly, you have two options:
1️⃣ Choose a piece that dries straight and style it to match your texture, or straighten your own hair to blend with the topper.
✔️ Pros: You can define the curls or waves to your liking using your preferred curling tool.
❌ Cons: You’ll need to restyle the topper regularly, as curls loosen over time or after washing. Depending on your technique and usage, the style may last 4–5 days to 2–3 weeks.
2️⃣ Choose a piece that dries naturally wavy or curly.
✔️ Pros: No need to curl the hair repeatedly, as it retains its natural texture.
❌ Cons: The curl pattern may not match your natural hair exactly. If the hair has been permed, heat styling (straighteners, curling irons, blow dryers) is not recommended, as it can permanently damage the curl structure. Avoid using brushes—finger-combing is best.
6. HOW LONG WILL MY TOPPER LAST?
The longevity of your topper depends on the construction type, maintenance routine, and frequency of use. On average, a silk-based topper can last around 2 years (even longer—some clients have worn theirs for over 5 years) with proper care. Lace-based toppers tend to be more delicate, with a lifespan of approximately 6 months to 1 year, depending on use.
There’s no exact expiration date, but over time, you may notice changes in hair texture or wear on the base. Some clients choose to purchase a second topper and reserve the older one for workouts, outdoor activities, or beach and poolside use.
Tips to extend the life of your topper:
- Handle with extra care. When removing it, ensure no hair is caught in the clips or comb, close the clips, brush gently, and store properly.
- Brush correctly. Start at the ends and work your way up, holding the base to prevent tugging or loosening knots.
- Wash only when necessary. Use suitable products and apply a deep conditioner to maintain moisture.
- Minimize friction. Contact with scarves, coats, or seatbacks can damage both hair and the base.
- Avoid dry or leave-in products. They can build up and leave residue, affecting the hair’s appearance and texture.
- If your topper is lace-based, handle it with greater care. The lace is delicate and wears out faster than silk, so be gentle and avoid unnecessary pulling.
- Rotate between pieces. Having multiple toppers and rotating them helps preserve each one longer.
- Virgin human hair lasts longer than processed hair. Chemically treated pieces will require more frequent maintenance.
Following these recommendations will help you enjoy your topper for as long as possible.
